Telstra Selects AppDirect to Power its Business Apps Marketplace #cloudasia

Collaboration with Australia’s Largest Telco Enables One-Stop Shop for Millions of Small Businesses to Find, Buy and Manage Apps

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., October 28, 2014 – AppDirect, the cloud commerce service company, announced today a major collaboration with Telstra — the largest telecommunications and information services company in Australia with a global presence that spans 230 countries — to power the new Telstra Apps Marketplace. The Telstra Apps Marketplace provides a one-stop shop and management portal for customers to find, buy, and use today’s best business apps. The new marketplace is live today and features two applications from Box and DocuSign.

“We’re very proud to work with Telstra to continue to push the boundaries of innovation in cloud services. Telstra was the first in its market to drive cloud services for its customer base and is continuing this leadership across its large global service footprint and among its well-established network of resellers. Working with Telstra, we’ve had the opportunity to not only power its new marketplace but provide a full scope of monetization and management services that make it incredibly easy to engage and benefit from cloud services,” said Daniel Saks, co-CEO of AppDirect. “AppDirect’s vision has always been to create a world where businesses have easy access to the technology tools they need to thrive. By collaborating with Telstra, we’ve been able to bring this ideal to life for millions of Australian small and medium businesses.”

New features for customers

The AppDirect-powered Telstra Apps Marketplace will deliver new features and capabilities, including faster on-boarding and go-to-market availability for new applications, as well as real-time updates so customers have access to the most up-to-date products. By logging into the Telstra Apps Marketplace, customers can use it as a central hub to manage their apps, including Box and DocuSign, and can also easily access and browse a catalog of specifically curated business apps and related services. Box is a cloud file sharing and collaboration app that lets businesses securely share and access important business files and documents, whether it’s the latest invoice for a customer, project proposal or pitch presentation. With access to DocuSign, businesses can quickly, easily and securely collect and transact business information and sign documents anytime, right from the marketplace. Telstra will continue to onboard more business applications over the coming months and migrate apps from Telstra’s previous platform in 2015.

Will Irving, Telstra Business Group Managing Director said, “Telstra wants to help businesses be the best that they can be, moving to cloud based business and mobile apps gives them greater flexibility, enhancing the ability to work on the move and reducing administration, leaving them more time to work on what matters most – their core business. Working with innovative providers such as AppDirect, we can deliver a simple online experience for our customers that will make it easy to find and use the right apps for their business.”

Boosting Conversions in the Cloud @AppDirect #telcocloud

By Richard Dufty, VP of Worldwide Sales and Strategic Partnerships

AppDirect

Today’s small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are driving a software revolution. Just a few years ago, these companies went to retail locations to buy software, install it, and configure their systems to run it—or hire someone to do all of this for them. Now SMBs can simply go online to purchase and use powerful cloud-based software solutions.

In fact, more SMBs than ever before are turning to these cloud solutions; recent research indicates that 60 percent of SMBs currently use cloud services, a number that is set to grow rapidly within the next few years. Sparked by this growth, the worldwide market for SMB cloud computing is predicted to reach $40 billion by the end of this year.

Software providers are already starting to see real evidence of these trends. In late May 2013, Microsoft announced that the cloud-based version of its flagship productivity suite, called Office 365, reached one million subscribers in 100 days, faster than Dropbox and Facebook. Microsoft’s numbers translate to an average of more than one Office 365 subscription sold every second in the last three and a half months.

Demand for Cloud Services Rises, but Success Isn’t Guaranteed

As SMBs increase demand for cloud-based apps, cloud service marketplaces are increasingly common. According to Gartner, 50 percent of the top 100 service providers will offer cloud services to their customers by 2015.

“Service providers really do not have a choice,” the analyst firm adds, “but must offer cloud services to protect their current market and to stay connected to their customers.”

Despite the surge of marketplaces, SMBs still face challenges purchasing and managing cloud-based applications. Almost 60 percent of SMBs say they lack the resources to implement new technologies, while 57 percent say they simply don’t have the time to do so.

For these reasons, service providers are ideally positioned to become SMBs’ cloud partner of choice. These providers already serve an important role for SMBs, offering essential business services—including Internet, voice, and mobile—that companies rely on. For busy SMBs, the option of turning to a trusted provider for cloud solutions can not only save time, but also make cloud adoption less intimidating.

AppDirect raises $9M, acquires Standing Cloud

AnnouncementPopular cloud application marketplace provider AppDirect made a flurry of announcements this week, starting with the securing of $9m in series B investment led by iNovia Capital Partners. The company also acquired Standing Cloud, a cloud orchestration and automated packaging solution provider, and tacked on its service to Cloud Foundry, a popular open source platform as a service.

AppDirect acts like a cloud services broker for software as a service and other web-based applications. The company uploads applications to its network, uses a RESTful API to integrate the SaaS or web-based app with AppDirect’s network, and pushes it out to various online marketplaces it partners with, promising developers a way to effectively target various industry verticals through enterprise application stores where such applications may be specifically relevant. It handles all of the transactions on behalf of the application developers.

“Both AppDirect and Standing Cloud have worked to develop technologies that make the cloud easier to use. With this acquisition, we can join forces to accelerate the speed of innovation and move faster than ever before,” said Daniel Saks, president and co-ceo of AppDirect.

Leslie Osborne, vice president of products and operations at Standing Cloud said that the company has been impressed with AppDirect’s technology for years and believes the two companies

Standing Cloud, which is backed by the Founding Group, was founded four years ago and offers its customers the ability create integrated and white-label cloud marketplaces – putting the company in direct competition with AppDirect. But it also offers software that automates the packaging and integration of the applications, technology that could prove very useful for AppDirect customers.

As part of the deal Standing Cloud will continue to operate semi-autonomously out of Colorado, US, and AppDirect will join the portfolio of Foundry Group investments – a venture capital group with a stake in several high-profile tech startups including Zygna and AdMeld (which was acquired by Google).

AppDirect also unveiled its new partnership with Cloud Foundry, launching an add-on marketplace powered by its APIs that will allow Cloud Foundry users to find, purchase and integrate third-party applications into their own being developed with the platform as a service. Cloud Foundry has also integrated its platform with AppDirect, meaning developers spinning up a Cloud Foundry instance can also launch their own AppDirect-powered app marketplace.

“We’re excited that opening our platform with APIs is also opening doors to new markets, such as PaaS. It demonstrates the versatility of our technology and underscores our position as the leading cloud distribution platform,” said Saks.

AppDirect White Paper: Putting the Cloud Within Reach

Putting the Cloud Within Reach
How Service Providers Can Succeed with Business Application Marketplaces

Few topics in technology seem to generate as much buzz as cloud computing. For small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), however, the cloud is far more than just the latest trend; it’s a tool that is fundamentally reshaping how many SMBs run their companies and the results they can achieve. By delivering cost-effective, on-demand computing power and capabilities, the cloud is dissolving the advantages long held by enterprises, and leveling the playing field for millions of SMBs around the globe.

This trend presents a tremendous opportunity for telecom companies and other service providers (SPs) of all sizes. Faced with tough resource constraints, SMBs need partners who can help them find and manage cloud services effectively, and SPs are ideally positioned to provide this assistance. But how can SPs serve SMBs when they, too, often have to contend with limited time, budgets, and other resources?

The answer is simple: cloud service marketplaces provided “as a service.” These web-based application stores—where users can find, purchase, and manage cloud-based software and services—are an ideal solution. Application marketplaces enable SPs to get to market quickly and launch a marketplace with a software delivery platform in a matter of months, instead of the years required to develop a portal from scratch.

This white paper will explore SMB cloud adoption and explain why SPs are perfect candidates to become SMB partners of choice for cloud solutions. It will also detail the elements of a successful cloud service marketplace as well as the technical challenges that SPs need to consider. Finally, the white paper will discuss the pros and cons of developing a solution in house versus working with an application marketplace platform provider.
